With Republican political candidates set to take in windfall
campaign contributions as a direct result of Citizens United[1],
U.S. Senate hopeful Tim Kaine’s (D-VA) fundraising performance is all the more
amazing, outraising his opponent by almost $1 million.[2]
Between April 1 and June 30, Tim Kaine raised close to $3
million, according to his campaign. The $3 million figure comes as Kaine’s
largest quarterly fundraising sum.
Kaine’s opponent, George Allen, raised over $2 million, also
Allen’s largest quarterly haul.
Even though Allen has close to $700,000 more in cash on
hand, Kaine has already been busy with reserving $3.5 million in advertising
space this fall.
Former Virginia governor Kaine’s fundraising success is due
in no small part to the positive vision he has campaigned on for Virginia’s and
America’s future.[3]
Within the Kaine campaign, there is a recognition of challenges but an
unabiding belief in the ability of Virginians and Americans to overcome those
challenges, primarily through education[4],
to construct a brighter future.
While Allen himself might have taken “the high road” as a
part of his campaign for U.S. Senate, Super PACs from outside the state have
repeatedly blasted Kaine for going along with President Obama’s economic
stimulus package, essentially painting a negative message that has offered
little in the way of policy solutions.[5]
As politically divisive as Virginia and the rest of the
country has become, Americans still want solutions to our most pressing policy
concerns. Tim Kaine has been the U.S. Senate candidate most willing and
seemingly able to confront these concerns head-on with real solutions.
Moreover, if an individual can be judged by the friends and
allies that he or she keeps, then it’s clear that Tim Kaine is the best
candidate for the U.S. Senate.
