A friend of a friend is a friend in politics and Democratic
nominee for Virginia governor, Terry McAuliffe, has friends in high places, the
highest political place in the country, in fact.
McAuliffe, a longtime friend of former U.S. President Bill
Clinton, played golf on Sunday with former president Clinton, President Obama,
and former U.S Trade Representative under President Clinton, Ron Kirk.[1]
In political behavioral speak, the golf game with these
powerful Democratic Party players most likely means McAuliffe will be “tapping”
them during his campaign for Virginia’s executive mansion next year. For
McAuliffe, then, it’s all hands on deck as this former chairman of the
Democratic National Committee aims for the governorship in Virginia.
McAuliffe’s golf game with these Democratic juggernauts
should also be seen as a “not so fast” for any other aspiring Democratic
nominees for governor of Virginia (wink, wink, Tom Perriello).
During Perriello’s tenure as U.S. Congressman from 2009 to
2011, Perriello became a favorite of Blue
Virginians who were looking for a
young symbol of their values. Almost two years after his electoral defeat, many
Virginians still talk eagerly about Perriello’s re-emersion into the sorted
world of politics.
But even with a strong base of support, Perriello doesn’t
have the Democratic political powerhouses on his side like McAuliffe.
For Virginia’s Democratic Party faithful, the decision of
deciding between McAuliffe and Perriello may be just as difficult as
Perriello’s decision to run against McAuliffe. Both nominees have a lot that
the Democratic Party base of Virginia desires.
Sometimes choice isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
