During his first appearance on Friday at Deep Run High
School gymnasium, vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan told attendees that the
commonwealth will play a pivotal role in the presidential election while
accusing President Obama of running a campaign based on “frustration and
anger,”[1]
an ironic claim coming from a member of the Romney team[2].
Ryan stated that “Hope and change has now become attack and
blame. We’re not going to fall for that this year, are we?” A rousing one-liner
indeed if you’re already a supporter of the Republican presidential ticket.
As Ryan’s statements make clear, the Romney administration
is attempting to shift the presidential campaign narrative away from Romney and
Ryan’s own higher socioeconomic centered policies and positions (not to mention
a lack of tax returns and overall campaign transparency) and towards President
Obama’s supposedly failed policies as president.
What’s also clear is that the Romney campaign will continue
to covet key swing states across the country by wooing voters, pointing out how
“key” they are to the upcoming presidential election. As Ryan said on Friday at Deep Run High
School in Virginia, “This is a state that has it all. And this is a state that
will determine it all.”[3]
Really? Ryan’s revelation may be news to the other 49 contiguous U.S. states.
Ryan also said that the Romney campaign will focus on issues
facing the country in order to “win a mandate” from voters. But if this is the
Romney campaign strategy, then Romney will lose the presidential election.
Mitt Romney has had so many different positions on similar
issues across his political career that even the most hardened Republican Party
follower will be hard-pressed to unquestionably throw their support behind the
former Massachusetts governor.[4]
Thus, the Obama campaign will most likely continue their
efforts to point out Romney’s extreme flip-flopping ways. After all, is this
any way for the next President of the United States to behave?
