Between a rock and an Allen: Allen wins primary victory with a visionless future

After the easy Virginia primary victories by establishment Republican politicians George Allen, Eric Cantor (R-7th), and J. Randy Forbes (R-4th), Virginia’s status as an “anti-incumbent” state will have to wait another election cycle.

The biggest political race in Virginia this cycle will be between two former Virginia governors, Tim Kaine[1] and George Allen.[2] Tuesday’s primary gave George Allen 65.1% of the votes, a victory only topped by the low voter turnout and the endorsement of tea party sweetheart Ken Cuccinelli.[3]

After Allen’s victory was sealed, he told an audience of around 150 Republicans at the Westin Richmond in Henrico County that “We’ve heard from the people of Virginia today…and Virginians are fired up, and they’re ready for America’s comeback.” If Allen calls a little more than 250,000 voters “the people of Virginia” who are “fired up,” his political acumen is even worse than previously thought.

The fact is, Virginian’s aren’t fired up, at least not for George Allen. And who could blame them?
George Allen and the rest of his establishment Republican cadre have brought little more to the political table than a checklist of special interest wants and a visionless future to boot, at least if you’re not a member of the super rich.

I wish I could sound a more positive note, but there is no other way to say it: George Allen in the Senate would be a huge step back for Virginia and the U.S. as a whole. It’s time for all Virginian’s to put their party loyalties aside and vote reasonably for Tim Kaine.
