Former Virginia Governor and U.S. Senate hopeful Tim Kaine
outraised his biggest GOP rival George Allen in the pre-primary filing period
for the second quarter.[1]
Kaine raised over $1.2 million between April 1 and May 23,
bringing his campaign total to $8.6 million while Allen’s campaign coffers
total out to $6.7 million.
While Kaine is unchallenged as the Democratic nominee for
U.S. Senate, Allen still has to square off with three other U.S. Senate
aspirants in the GOP: Chesapeake Minister E. W. Jackson, tea party favorite
Jamie Radtke, and the demagogue Del. Bob Marshall. Of the three, Radtke is the
only candidate who has financial numbers available from the second quarter with
less than $50,000 on hand.[2]
Allen’s campaign spokeswomen, Katie Wright, responded to the
latest campaign numbers by uttering the usual mud about Kaine’s ties to
President Obama. “There is little doubt Chairman Kaine will continue to be
rewarded for his loyalty to President Obama’s agenda,” Wright said.
But as Kaine’s campaign spokeswoman, Brandi Hoffine,
correctly pointed out, “strong grassroots enthusiasm for Governor Kaine” has
been the backbone of Kaine’s fundraising success.[3]
When you have principles and a political vision to lead
with, grassroots support almost invariably follows. This is why George Allen’s
campaign has lacked adequate grassroots funding, because the candidate himself
has few admirable principles and clearly has no political vision.
So, the question remains: Kaine or Allen for U.S. Senate? If
only all decisions in life were this simple…
